In September 2006, founder Paul Durov launched VK and conducted beta testing. On October 10 of that year, the domain name vkontakte.ru was officially registered, that is, October 10, 2006 was the birthday of VK. In February 2007, the basic users of the VK website exceeded 100,000 and it was determined to be the second largest social network in Russia.

In July 2007, the number of users reached 1 million; in April 2008, the number of users reached 10 million.

In December 2008, VK surpassed its rival Odnoklassniki to become the most popular social service website in Russia

In January 2014, VK had about 600,000 daily users, and in January 2015, the number of page views reached 70 million per day. As of July 15, 2015, the number of page views reached an average of more than 64 million per day.

In April 2016, VK was redesigned. The homepage is simpler and more modern, and the left side is wider and the lists are updated. For example, “My Album” and “My Music” were redesigned to “Photos” and “Music”.

On August 17, 2016, through 2,500 patches of various sizes, the PC version of VK was completely redesigned.
