The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions was adopted by the 33rd UNESCO General Conference on October 20, 2005.

“Cultural diversity” refers to the various forms in which groups and societies express their culture. It is not only reflected in the various ways in which human cultural heritage is expressed, promoted and passed on through rich and colorful cultural expressions, but also in the various ways of artistic creation, production, dissemination, sales and consumption through various means and technologies.

On December 29, 2006, the 25th Session of the Standing Committee of the Tenth National People’s Congress of my country approved the Convention.

The objectives of the Convention are:

① To protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions;

② To create conditions for the prosperity and free interaction of various cultures in a mutually beneficial manner;

③ To encourage dialogue between different cultures to ensure a wider and more balanced cultural exchange in the world, and to promote mutual respect and the construction of a culture of peace among different cultures;

④ Strengthen interculturality and develop cultural interactions in the spirit of building bridges among peoples;

⑤ Promote respect for the diversity of cultural expressions at the local, national and international levels and raise awareness of its value;

5 Recognize the importance of the link between culture and development to all countries, especially developing countries, and support national and international actions to ensure recognition of the true value of this link;

⑦ Recognize the particularity of cultural activities, products and services in conveying cultural identities, values and meanings; ⑧ Reaffirm the sovereign right of countries to maintain, adopt and implement policies and measures they deem appropriate to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions on their territory;

⑨ In the spirit of partnership, strengthen international cooperation and solidarity, especially to enhance the capacity of developing countries to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions.
