Shopee is affiliated to its parent company Sea Group (formerly Garena), and is currently an Internet company in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. The name Sea Group comes from the fact that it is rooted in Southeast Asia, which has a population of over 600 million.

Sea Group was founded in Singapore in 2009 by Chinese entrepreneur Li Xiaodong, covering markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and Taiwan. Its subsidiaries include Garena, the world’s leading online game production and distribution company, e-commerce platform Shopee, and SeaMoney, one of the fastest-growing e-financial service providers in Southeast Asia. Sea Group was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in October 2017, becoming the first Southeast Asian Internet company to be listed on the NYSE.

In 2015, Shopee was established in Singapore as an e-commerce business platform under Sea Group, and later expanded to markets such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

In 2016, Shopee entered China and established its headquarters in Shenzhen, fully launching its cross-border business in China.
